The royal initiative to build winter homes for the Layap community in Wophu, Gasa, has faced delays, with construction yet to start. Originally granted by His Majesty The King in 2020, the project aims to provide permanent winter residences for 197 households, addressing the harsh conditions the Layaps face during the colder months.
However, challenges such as road access, plot demarcation, and pending utility installations have hindered progress. The initial plan only included footpaths, but requests for internal roads have led to a redesign of the layout, complicated by the steep terrain. Furthermore, clearance from relevant authorities is required before roadwork can begin.
Despite these setbacks, some preparatory work has been completed, with residential plots allocated and basic infrastructure like power and water connections in place. The dzongkhag administration plans to hold consultations with the beneficiaries and conduct a feasibility study for road construction.
While delays continue, the project remains a promising initiative to improve the Layap community’s living conditions, offering hope for a better future.
