Punakha – Just across the river from the majestic Punakha Dzong, the old town stands in stark contrast disorganized construction, lack of basic infrastructure, and years of neglect. With no Local Area Plan (LAP) in place, development has been haphazard, with poor drainage, unpaved roads, and a lack of streetlights frustrating both residents and visitors. While new developments emerge nearby, unsafe construction near the Mochhu River raises fresh concerns. Officials say work on LAP-II is underway, but challenges like land validation, limited budgets, and cultural preservation clashes continue to delay progress.
