The Gobbins: A Stunning Cliff Walk Struggling to Stay Open.

Perched along the dramatic County Antrim coastline, The Gobbins Cliff Path is one of Northern Ireland’s most visually striking tourist attractions. Originally opened in 1902, the cliff-hugging walkway was revived in 2015 after a £7.5 million investment. But despite its breathtaking views and historical charm, the path has faced nearly as many closures as it has days open.

Rockfalls, storm damage, and ongoing repairs have kept The Gobbins closed for approximately 46% of the time since its reopening—more than 1,600 days in total. The result? Tour operators are hesitant to include it in itineraries, and visitors often arrive to find the path inaccessible.

Yet, the local council remains hopeful. With £13.5 million in new investment—including plans for a dramatic 60m staircase and virtual reality experiences—The Gobbins could soon offer more reliable and inclusive ways to explore its coastal wonders. Until then, it remains a remarkable but unpredictable destination.
